Dermal Fillers Explained

Dermal fillers (such as Juverderm, Restylane and Teosyal), are popular treatments for wrinkles and facial lines. A dermal filler procedure helps to ‘fill out’ and smooth away troublesome:

      • Nose to Mouth Grooves
      • Forehead Lines
      • Frown Furrows
      • Marionette Lines
      • Acne Pits
      • Crows Feet
      • Lips – Fuller and Defined
      • Deep Tear Trough and Dark Eye Circles
      • Non Surgical Total Facelift

Dermal fillers are also effective for increasing fullness to narrow lips, enhancing sunken cheeks and can even be used to contour the bridge of the nose.

What is going on and why does our skin look less bright or glowing as we age?

Hyaluronic acid is an essential skin component, part of collagen. It acts like a sponge that retains water and keeps the skin moisturized, plumped and healthy. Over time, our collagen cells which provide the structural support, resilience and shape to the skin, reduce in number, which causes the skin to lose elasticity, allowing fine lines and wrinkles to develop.
We lose 50 % of our hyaluronic acid between the age of 40 and 50. The skin becomes dry, thin and fragile. In addition to normal ageing and loss of hyaluronic acid, our skin is exposed daily to various external factors that change its surface which results in the loss of brightness:

– Sun exposure
– Pollution
– Junk food
– Lack of sleep
– Smoking

These factors produce ant-oxidants, which overwhelm or body’s defences by depleting our natural stock of anti-oxidants.

What can Dermal Fillers do to help?

Collagen Replacement Therapy using dermal fillers make it possible to temporarily suspend and even reverse the signs of ageing. Following treatment, wrinkles are markedly and visibly reduced and lines in the skin, repaired. The suppleness, elasticity and tone of the skin is naturally restored, with immediately visible results.

There are a wide variety of dermal fillers available and our fully qualified Aesthetic Professional will need to assess your skin carefully before selecting the correct filler for you.

Dermal fillers that we now use are technologically advanced man made fillers (such as Restylane, Juvederm and Teosyal), which are specifically designed for each area enabling the treatment to be administered quickly with very little ‘down time’ or recovery time. As these man-made fillers are animal-free they also require no test prior to treatment, whereas approx 2-3% of people have an allergic reaction to collagen and as such we carry out a 28-day skin test, prior to any natural collagen treatment.

Once the correct filler and injection plan has been created, you can expect almost immediate reversal of the ageing effects, which improve further over the following weeks as the skin condition improves internally.

The filler treatment may be combined with other aesthetic medical treatments such as Botox© injections, PRGF Plasma and mesotherapy, PDO Thread Lift or Laser.

We recommend and plan a skin conditioning treatment using the award winning Jan Marini Skin Care Management System, which may be supplemented with a course of light to medium skin peels, to get your skin into the best condition as possible to achieve even better results.

What will happen when I decide I want to have this treatment?

Your pre-treatment consultation is very important.

Take your time and discuss :

Your medical history

The pre-filled sterile dermal filler syringe and a fine needle (or a cannula) is prepare and injected. The depth of the injection depends on the type of hyaluronic acid gel and the desired results:

      • Superficial injections efficiently hydrate the skin and revive its glow.
      • Deeper injections fill wrinkles and create volume.

In order to optimize your comfort during the injection sessions, most fillers such as Teosyal contain anesthetic (lidocaine), although we may also suggest a topical anaesthetic cream for certain areas. After injecting the hyaluronic acid, the practitioner gently massages the injected area to mold the product.

Depending on your skin type, you may experience some temporary bruising and/or swelling that are confined to the treated area.

How long do the effects last?

Several months after the injection, hyaluronic acid naturally degrades and resorbs like any natural skin component. This time is dependent on the type of filler and your skin. Typically most people see this around 12 months but with some this can be up to 18 months. It is not possible to exactly predict these timescales but once you have had your first treatment, we will get an idea how your skin changes occur over what time period. However, by supplementing dermal filler injections with correct skin care (eg Jan Marini SCMS) the overall results will be better and could last longer.
